Thousands of lawsuits have been filed against Roundup weed killer, which is owned by Bayer (who used to be called Monsanto). People who sued Roundup (aka Plaintiffs) say they developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma from use of the glyphosate-based weedkiller.
There have been several high-profile jury trials where jurors were awarded millions of dollars. In one case, over a billion dollars was awarded to plaintiffs. Over 113,000 Roundup lawsuits have been resolved, with Bayer paying out about $11 billion in settlements.
Glyphosate is a weed killer used on broad leaf plants, weeds and grasses, and is an active ingredient in many commercial herbicide products, including Roundup. Glyphosate works by blocking an enzyme, called EPSP synthase, which is necessary for the synthesis of amino acids in plants. Without these amino acids, plants cannot grow and will eventually die.
Glyphosate has been used for a variety of purposes, including:
Landscaping and Gardening
used to manage weeds in lawns, gardens and landscaped areas
Agriculture
used to control weeds in fields of crops like soybeans, corn, cotton and wheat
Forestry
used to control unwanted vegetation
Aquatic
used to manage aquatic weeds in
bodies of water
Pre-Harvest
sometimes applied to crops before harvest to aid in the drying process
Roundup is widely used in the United States by home and professional gardeners, agricultural workers, landscapers and groundskeepers.
